The University of the Third Age (U3A) aims to encourage men and women from all walks of life, who are no longer in full-time employment, to join together in educational, creative and leisure activities on a self-help basis. The word 'University' is used in its original sense of people coming together to share and pursue learning in all its forms. No academic qualifications are required or given, and all members are both teachers and learners. There are now approximately 820 local U3A groups throughout the U.K. with a growing membership of about 270,000. Dorridge U3A is expanding rapidly and now has about 400 members. They have a wide variety of interests which are studied in Activity Groups representing for example, the Arts, Literature, History, Ornithology and Genealogy as well as more active pursuits such as dancing, walking and table tennis. These small, friendly groups usually meet in members' homes, are informal in nature and structured to meet the particular needs of participants. It is in these small groups that members are able to share their knowledge, skills and experience, and pursue their interest in self-development. In addition, Dorridge U3A holds four general meetings each month at Dorridge Village Hall. On these occasions members come together to hear a speaker on a subject of general interest, to socialise and enjoy some afternoon refreshment!
